I have noticed something unusual with my gmail and I cannot find anything similar in online searches.

I sent an email to a government email address and it came back as undeliverable. RFC822:john.doe@123.gov

After I got this, I started received spam emails with the person I was trying to contact by email addressed in the subject of the message.

For example,

Subj: Complimentary Download for John Doe

However, it used my gmail email address for delivery. What would cause this to happen and how? The person I was trying to contact did tell me they were having some problems with their email address and since had it changed.
