|
|
i have a thumb drive that i use between different computers. my most sensitive data is kept on a 250 meg thumb drive. chances are, some day, someone is going to come to me and ask to see the data. and they will try and crack it. anyone know of some good free! software that will run under windows (hey not everyone has a networking job using *nix versus windows) ...
there must be some tool out there that will let me keep the files encrypted at all times, except when i need to access them. any ideas?
thanks alot people.

Look at truecrypt. It is free and since you mentioned that someone may force you to see the data or attempt to crack it - truecrypt offers a feature that allows you to nest a hidden volume inside of another. They state that particular situation as the reason for its inclusion.

Choose any algorithm, trust me, they are NOT the weakest link in your security. As long as you use <24 marks long passphrases, have possibility of keyloggers, spyware, viruses, and dont wipe off the original files, you have other problems to worry about than encryption algorithm security.

As much as it seems like people like to harp on the "it doesnt matter what you pick, the cypher isnt your weakest point". You might as well pick Twofish/Whirlpool as your choice.
Twofish is secure, an AES finalist, and faster than any of the other 128-bit block cyphers that TC uses.
(p.s. I second Eraser as a dependable erasure utility.)
TrueCrypt
Eraser

Simply run
cipher /w:c
to wipe all free space in C-drive in XP Pro. Change letter c to d etc. to wipe other hdd free space. Otherwise, use Eraser.
