With all of these security related linux distros, I sometimes wonder why I'm even trying to create my own. I want to do it because it will teach me alot, but it would be nice if after lots of advice and tweaking, I could get mine up on a list like that.

I've been working hard with my colleagues to make a LiveCD for our internal use to capture forensic grade images. We've done the first version, and decided to throw it open to everyone so that we can get a widespread test and feedback.

The company that has done it is Vital Data and they have decided to release it through a community website they support forensicIT.com.au to attract interest to the site. You have to register to download, but registration is free.

The distribution is called "Vital Data Forensic or Rescue Kit (FoRK)" , and is based on Knoppix 3.6 to avoid those annoying last sector issues we faced with some drives on the old kernel. IMHO it's a good tool for obtaining forensic images and previewing systems, but of course, I'm slightly biased.

Check out PartPE.

The BartPE boot CD provides a clean boot into standard Windows environment for repairing a non-bootable Windows installation.

When you can't boot to Windows, BartPE will allow access to your installed scanners and repair utilities to repair your Windows installation.

Cracking good list ST,

I did not know that there was that many, but I really did not look that hard.
My favorite is Knoppix-STD, if is simple to use and makes me feel like less of an idiot than normal. If fulfilled my needs at the time, on a side note I really like live CDs as a whole because when you boot up you know exactly what you are going to get and if you travel with one you have a familiar environment even on a strangers PC
By stranger, I mean someone you do not know, but you have written permission to use their machine and your liveCD. Nothing bad going on here...

I like the Auditor distribution myself. Unlike the other 3 or so I've tried, it includes at least minimal documentation on the tools. Do any of the others?

There's at tut on Auditor at GSO if anyone is interested. The tut's aim is to help Linux newbies and auditiing newbies. With the onboard doc and the tut, it makes Auditor easier to use. It rocks.

I used to like F.I.R.E neat concept, mega outdated now though.

My favourites, probably Phlak and Auditor, although I like how Whoppix is coming along with the Metasploit framework.
