I'm trying to find a solution to the following problem. We have a need to configure laptops that are issued to our staff and used by external companies and/or agencies to review confidential material. For each request, we build the machine from scratch then encrypt the hard drive and disable all access points (NIC, USB, PCMCIA, etc). We setup a "user" account with limited rights and then load the required review data. The machines are often taken off-site and our staff have no way of making any changes once we hand off the machine.

We use Ghost to load our default image files, but the process still takes a few hours to account for all of our updates and the data encryption process. Ghosting to an image file without the data but after the drive is encrypted would result in 40 or 60 GB image files so that is not a viable solution. We have tried pushing for the use of a shredding program that will make x amount of passes on the folders where the data is copied, but have not had any luck getting approval from the process owners due to the nature and confidentiality of the data.

Is there any method or software product that might help us reduce our prep time. We would like a solution where the machine is already encrypted and we only need to address the data from the prior review. Something that would work like Windows System Restore but instead allow us to revert the entire system back to the state it was in before the data was loaded onto the machine. We have looked at Deep Freeze, which allows you to specify a specific number of reboots between the restore, but have some reservations that the data will inadvertently be erased. If this happens while the machines are in the hands of our staff it will present a major issue and cause lengthy delays or cancellations of the review process.

Thanks for any suggestions.
