The SETI project is very like space itself -- space is 99.7 percent void of content. 3.6 percent of known matter (to us) is centered in a mass volume of .00037 percent of known (by us) space.

In more understandable language, we are looking for a signal generated by an intellegent source in a vastness of garbled random noise. Looking for Nemo (the fish) in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans would be considered much easier and more successful (but much less rewarding).

Although I myself have doubts about the success of SETI, I have never stopped supporting the project itself for the past twenty years. It is my firm belief that this is truly a noble and unselfless project taken on by the populace of mankind.

Got a way to go to catch this up.

Surely if your that keen the same specced box with a customised linux install would give even better performance.

I was initially surprised that there are so few *nix users on that list but thinking about it most *nix users tend to stick it on an old slow box as is shown by the last entry on the list.

SETI@home is now up and running on my Linux box. The command line version is nowhere near as interesting to watch for half an hour as the GUI version tho Wink

System 1: XP2100+, 512meg ram PC2100 DDR, Windows XP Pro, SETI@home GUI version
System 2: Athlon 800, 392meg ram PC100, Slackware Linux 9, SETI@home CLI

Wonder which'll be faster? Laughing

Hobbies, what are they? Laughing

As a side note, it's interesting the different amount of time each unit takes to process, mine have varied from c. 6 hrs to c. 14 hrs. Suppose it depends on the current system workload but still, that sort of variation is a bit more than I would expect.

It seems that SF seti group never gets updated. The only way I've found to view updated stats is quit then rejoin. Is it just me?

It does get updated it just takes a while. My first unit was done in 4 hours and it took about 24-36 hours for it to show on the site.

Yeh it only updates once a day I think, if you use http://seti.security-forums.com though it will take you to the CGI version which shows the real time stats.
